A CLASS EXPERIMENT AT I.E.S. LLANES

This year we are celebrating the International Year of Astronomy. Having this in mind we are going to measure the Earth in the same rudimentary way Eratosthenes ( a mathematician and astronomer) did in the 3rd century Before Christ. To be able to do it, we'll work in different classes to get to know Eratoshenes and his experiment better, the calculations we need for the measurement, as well as building the materials we need for that.

ENGLISH LESSON:
In the English class we'll work Eratosthenes 's biography. The document is here.

Eratosthenes's biography

GEOGRAPHY CLASS:
We'll watch two videos which have been subtitled in English.
First Video: Carl sagan explains how Eratosthenes discovered that the Earth was not flat.

After this we can watch another video as a complement of Carl Sagan's explanation.

This power point presentation explains the importance of Alexandria in Eratosthenes's times and how some Greek phisolophers and mathematitians had proposed the idea of a spherical earth before him.

(Eratosthenes Earth Measure)

We'll Watch this animation on how the sun rays strike the Earth on different days and months of the year.

Finally and to remember what we have learnt we can Read how Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth in an interactive video.

TECHNOLOGY CLASS
We'll follow the instructions to make a proper base for a stick (our gnomon) step by step:

GNOMON1

MATHS CLASS
We'll need to learn and practise some trigonometry to be able to make the calculations.

FINALLY on the 26th March, we'll try to measure the radius of the Earth. We'll go to the playground with our gnomos and we'll wait for the sun rays to cast a shadow every ten minutes. We'll measure the shadow length. We'll write the data, our calculations, comments and results in this working sheet.
